Back injuries are common after serious car accidents. Severe back injuries can result in body paralysis. However, milder damage can result in issues like herniated disks. Like head injuries, back injuries are not always visible. However, it is essential to receive a thorough screening after your accident.
A back injury claim allows you to get compensation from the person or business that is legally responsible for causing your injuries, or the underlying accident that led to your injuries. Since back injuries can range from strains and sprains to spinal cord injuries and paralysis, the settlement value of any given claim must be determined on a case-by-case basis. However, some general guidelines apply when assessing the settlement value of a back injury claim.
Along with injuries to the spine, soft tissues such as back muscles and tendons can be strained or pulled. Ligaments can be sprained.
Treatment: For minor back pain, many physicians recommend rest and ice or heat application, along with over-the-counter pain relievers. If your back pain does not go away in a couple of weeks, you can visit your physician for an evaluation and find a chiropractor. More severe injuries, such as spinal cord injury, broken bones or muscle tears, may require surgery.
Recovery: Minor muscle strains should heal within weeks. If you have muscle tears, your physician may recommend surgery and physical therapy. It may take months for you to recover. Bones that are surgically repaired usually require three to four months to adequately treat.
With spinal injuries, your body will do most of its healing work in the first six months after the injury. Regrettably, physical functions that are not restored in the first year after injury will likely not return.
