Most truck accidents occur during the night. Almost 4,000 trucking accidents result in fatalities per year. Seventy-three percent of those fatalities were not the truck driver. In 2012, there were 104,000 people injured in crashes involving large trucks—an increase of 18 percent from 88,000 in 2011. Seventy-eight percent of the fatal crashes involving large trucks occurred on weekdays. Of those weekday large-truck fatal crashes, 72 percent occurred during the daytime hours of 6 a.m. to 5:59 p.m.

In 2012, large trucks were more likely to be involved in a fatal multiple-vehicle crash as opposed to a fatal single-vehicle crash than were passenger vehicles (81% of fatal crashes involving large trucks are multiple-vehicle crashes, compared with 58% for fatal crashes involving passenger vehicles).

Texas Truck Accidents

In Texas, there were 4,607 total vehicles involved in fatal accidents in 2012. Of those, 543 were large trucks, which accounts for 11.8 percent of all Texas trucking accidents. Large-Truck Drivers Intoxicated?

The percentage of large-truck drivers involved in fatal crashes who had blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of .08 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher was 2 percent in 2012. For drivers of other types of vehicles involved in fatal crashes in 2012, the percentages of drivers with BAC levels .08 g/dL or higher were 23 percent for passenger cars, 22 percent for light trucks, and 27 percent for motorcycles.

Avoiding Trucking Accidents?

Drivers of passenger cars can avoid accidents with trucks by being aware of the blind spots around trucks. In addition, these drivers should avoid passing a truck on the right when the truck is turning right. Drivers should always observe a truck’s turn signals, use appropriate passing procedures, not cut trucks off, and report dangerous driving to the proper authorities.
